Cost per page. Color Inkjet vs. Color Laser?

Question by ry_guy_621: Cost per page. Affect Inkjet vs. Affect Laser?
I’m trying to determine if it is finally time to buy a affect laser printer for the office of 20 employees that I support. We do not photograph pictures, but we do photograph lots of charts and graphs that are nice to have in affect (even though there isn’t a large quantity of affect on each page). Can anyone point me to a website that has real data on cost per page for current affect laser printers vs inkjet printers. FYI – I usually buy HP Business Inkjet 1200 series for my inkjet printers which are pretty excellent cost per page vs other inkjet printers, I just can’t find any excellent data on cost per page for affect lasers.

This is one of those “6 of one, half a dozen of another” Q & A’s. There are so many variables to consider I have my own business with one employee (me!) I plotting I’d save money by using an inkjet 3 in 1 unit. Initial cost for the machine was a lot less than a laser 3 in 1 but the cost of ink cartridges was eating me up. I don’t do all that much printing and the cartridges would dry up, etc. and I’d have to replace them when they were only half gone. Toner cartridges are a lot more forgiving. Even if they’ve been sitting for weeks, a few gentle shakes and they’re as excellent as new. No clogged inkjets, etc. Anyway, I’m glad I made the switch to laser. Here’s a few articles (in no particular order of importance) that might help you.

In MSWord, adjust the sliders on the ruler at the top of the screen at either end of the page. This will make the text tighter.

In other programs without a similar option, you’re just going to have to choose where to break the lines yourself and get to work with the Enter key.

This is how I come up with character concepts. A page like this takes me about an hour and a half from the first pencil line to the last affect added. On average I’ll have one decent concept per page. This page was unique, it had three.

I generally only carry three colors on me, Golden’s carbon black and then two other tubes of affect. On this day it was a a Golden’s Pythol(?) Red, Golden’s turquiose, and A&M’s matte Ocre.

I’ll talk about A&M Matte colors later, they have a unique drying time like gouche, but not.

Affect laser printers are a better scale than inkjet printers since they lower the cost of ownership. But when shopping for a affect laser printer, what should you look for? What things to consider?

Here are 10 things that you should consider before buying a affect laser printer.

1)      Workload: Know your workload requirements for the printer i.e. how many pages are expected to photograph per month. Narrow your list depending upon your workload requirement.

2)      Photograph Speed: Know the photograph speeds for both black and affect prints. More the photograph speed, quicker is the printer. You would surely want to invest in a quicker printer.

3)      First Page Out: Be sure to check out the printer specifications to know how much time a printer will take to photograph out the first page. More time it takes to photograph the first page, more delay there is in printing. You need a printer that takes less time to photograph the first page.

4)      Photograph Quality/Resolution: You obviously need a printer that has brilliant photograph quality. Check out the resolution for the printer. It is determined by Dots Per Inch (DPI) measured vertically and horizontally. Higher the DPI or resolution, higher will be the photograph quality.

5)      Printer Supplies/Toner Cartridges: Check out prices on printer supplies, especially toner cartridges. You do not want to spend money buying expensive toners. While you are checking prices on toner, also be aware of cost per page for each toner. Low cost per page is what you are looking for. Also, check prices on other printer supplies. Calculate the costs and buy one that does not empty your bank balance buying printer supplies.

6)      Networking: Is networking vital to you? If yes, then buy a printer that has networking/connectivity options. In case, your printer doesn’t has networking options, check for photograph servers.

7)      Duplex Printing: Some printers do not support duplex printing i.e. printing on both sides of a paper. You want to invest in one that supports duplex printing.

8)      Paper Types: Do you need to photograph on diversity of paper types like business cards, marketing collateral etc? Be sure that your printer supports these paper type options.

9)      Paper Tray/Size Options: Are you going to photograph a lot? Or are you going to use this affect laser printer in a networked environment? If yes, see if a printer has paper tray options.

10)  Printer Memory: Do you need to photograph large files with graphics? Make sure there is ample quantity of printer memory or you’ll end up waiting hours for your prints to come out.

11)   Bonus Tip: Cost of a printer may be an vital thing too. But before you choose to buy a printer based on the price alone, be sure to go through the above points or you’ll end up buying a non-useful printer. After you narrow down your list based on the above points, do some comparison shopping. Check out prices on few stores and see where you can get a better deal.
