Court Reporting Contest – 280 Words Per Minute!

www.courtreporternet.com A Court Reporting Contest. Who’s the fastest typist in the land? If you’re talking about the Land of Lincoln, it’s arguably Melanie Humphrey-Sonntag, who has won the Illinois court reporters speed contest for the past three years. At last year’s event she transcribed the contest’s blazing dictation—averaging 245 words a minute—with a 99.193 percent accuracy. That’s about 4 words a following. Or to place it another way, Humphrey-Sonntag types quicker than your average auctioneer discussion. Wednesday morning, the Wheaton resident will test her skills 2000 miles away at the National Court Reporters Association convention in Anaheim. She’ll be simple to spot amid the 25 or so other competitors She’s the one in pink tennis shoes, pink earrings, pink shorts—all for luck, of course. Humphrey-Sonntag will also wear a T-shirt that features a photo of her late husband, who died 15 years after the couple met at—where else?—the national speed reporting competition. Most people recognize court reporters from television: A man or (more often) a woman gallops hands across a keyboard with an emotionless expression. It’s a cliche found in most courtroom dramas, although few know it’s a profession perhaps older than the judges’ or attorneys’. In fact, reporting or scribing is as ancient as written history itself, stretching back to remains. Examples of shorthand in English exist from as early as the 12th Century. Humphrey-Sonntag got involved just a bit later: 1977 to be exact

This is me typing as quick as I can, around 530 CPM (Characters Per Minute) and 100 WPM (Words Per Minute). Done by Eric Oakley ===###===###===###===###===###===### This was not a perfect run, as you can see, I stopped some times, but it was pretty excellent. It’s not fake, and the top ranks on this site are bots, that can be easly done… If anyone wants to try out, here’s the site: speedtest.10-quick-fingers.com

Q&A: What “mind games” do you play to help yourself complete tasks?

Question by Simon: What “mind games” do you play to help yourself complete tasks?
Do you play small psychological games in your head to help you complete mundane or even vital tasks?
For example, someone starting an exercise program might say, “Everyday I workout counts as a win and a non-workout day counts as a loss. At the end of the first month I’ll see if I have a winning record.
A reader might say I’ll try to end 100 pages in the next hour or I’ll see how many pages I read in the next hour and then try to beat that page per minute rate in the next hour (making it a small more fascinating to read for two hours- that sort of thing).

Top Shelf

I really dig the Bookshelf Project Flickr group. It gives me an outlet for a common sick urge that many people in my demographic suffer from.

You were kind enough to invite me to your home for a dinner party and I excused myself in the middle of the meal to use the restroom. But it was a ruse: I high-tailed it to the living room so I could spend ten minutes standing with my head tilted to the right, checking out the couple of dozen books you have on that one shelf above the center-channel speaker in your entertainment cage.

I’ve been meaning to do one of these "annotated bookcase" photos for a long, long time. Recently a pal posted one and it sort of egged me on to finally do it. That, plus the fact that Zero-Sum is due for an overhaul (where I cautiously choose which titles wouldn’t be missed if I removed them, and choose which new titles have earned a coveted spot in the rankings). Kinda fun to paper these things.

This is the huge "zero sum" bookcase in my office dedicated to "entertainment" books. "Zero Sum" meaning that when a new book goes _in,_ obviously an existing book (or two) has to come out to make room. I have no self-control when it comes to books in the office and this is the only way to keep the things from becoming such an infestation that my computers sit on desks made of books, I sit on chairs made from books, I keep my books in bookcases made of books…

(More shelves to come…)
